Texarkana's Most Common Spiders

We have several common spiders in our Texas service area. Some are completely harmless. Some are mostly harmless. And some aren't harmless at all. Let's take a look at a few of the spiders you might find in your Texas home and what you need to know about them.

All spiders have venom. These are predatory creatures that use their venom to subdue their prey. But not all spiders are considered venomous to people. Some spiders do not have a venom that is harmful to us and others aren't capable of biting us to inject their venom. These are the harmless and mostly harmless spiders you'll find in your home. Some common non-venomous spiders you might find in your home are common house spiders (as you might expect), grass spiders, wolf spiders, orb weaver spiders, crab spiders, long-bodied cellar spiders, and jumping spiders. While these are creepy bugs to have crawling around in your Texarkana home, they won't send you to the hospital.

In Texas, we have two venomous spiders you should watch out for. You can probably name them. They are famous. Or should we say infamous? They are the black widow spider and the brown recluse spider. These spiders are considered venomous because their venom is potent enough to cause serious harm to humans. A bite from a black widow spider is not only painful, it can lead to serious sickness and hospitalization. A bite from a brown recluse spider can cause necrosis (death of skin tissue) in the wound. These are two spiders you definitely don't want inside your home.

Of the two venomous spiders that can get into Texas homes, the brown recluse is by far the worst. This is not because brown recluse spiders are more dangerous or more prone to bite you, it is because they can do quite well inside your home. Black widows prefer to be outside. Brown recluse spiders have no problem living with you, and they can grow their populations inside your home. Infestations of these spiders have been calculated in the thousands.
